The sky on the night it started, as an anniversary print

Anniversary presents run out fast, because the thing you want to give is a date and a date is not an object. A star chart is the one way to hand over the evening itself: this is what was above that street, at that hour, and it is verifiable — anyone with an ephemeris can check it.

Any moment works better than the wedding day everyone already prints: the night you met, the night one of you moved cities, the night on the balcony. Pick the one that only the two of you would know to choose.

You need the town and roughly the hour. The place sets the horizon — Paris and Buenos Aires do not share a single constellation at the same instant — and the hour sets the rotation.

Printing it at home? There is a second paper: the same sky as ink on white. A full-bleed night A3 bands on a home printer and drinks a cartridge; the ink one does not. Same price, pick either on the next page.

Preview free, one-off payment by card, no account. The place, the moment and the line of text are yours to change on the next page; the example shown here is a real sky over Paris on 7 September 2018, 23:15 local time.

The line of text

The line under the chart is where the private part goes: “The night we met — Paris, 7 September 2018”. Sixty characters, printed small.

Questions people ask

We met in a bar, not at an address — is that precise enough?

More than enough. The sky changes measurably over hundreds of kilometres, not over a few streets: any address in the same city gives the same chart. Type the town, or the street if you want the name printed on it.

Can I print it in a different size?

The PDF is A3 (297 × 420 mm) vector. Printed on A4 it simply scales down and stays sharp; a print shop will scale it up to A2 or a poster without a pixel showing, because there are no pixels in it.

Can I see it before I pay?

The preview on this page is the real drawing for the example sky, and the checkout page shows your own as soon as you type the place — watermarked, otherwise identical. You are buying the thing you already looked at.
